What to do with a too large dental prosthesis? If your prosthesis seems too large, unstable and food residue gets stuck between it and your gums, the denturist will have to make modifications to your prosthesis. In fact, it is not the prosthesis that expands but rather your mouth that changes. |

Why does our mouth change over time? The bone structure on which the denture resorbs over time. After the extraction of one or more teeth, the bone under the gum loses its stimulation. It therefore tends to decrease in volume, a bit like a limb in a cast for several weeks and losing muscle mass and therefore bone mass. The jaws function in a similar way if they do not have teeth with their roots to stimulate the bone directly. Bone mass decreases over time and varies from person to person. This is called bone resorption. Rapid gum changes can also occur due to weight loss, viruses or disease and the use of certain medications. |
To readjust a denture: replenishing and reliningTo readjust a denture that has become “too big”, two procedures are used: replenishing and relining. Replenishing consists of adding acrylic to the inside of the prosthesis to fill the gap between the soft tissues and the denture. This work can be done in a single step, directly during an appointment with the denturist. In general, this technique allows a problem to be corrected at an affordable cost and the life of the repair is reasonable depending on the maintenance that will be done on the prosthesis. Relining, on the other hand, aims to completely replace the pink acrylic used in the prosthesis while preserving the teeth of the old prosthesis. Depending on the technique used, the process can be carried out in a single day or require a few days. |
