Dentists use local anesthesia for most treatments to prevent the pain that can result from various procedures in the dental office. Local anaesthesia is used to block nerve endings and thereby block pain signals by causing numbness in the nerve that feeds the teeth and the tissues around them for a variable period of time. Unlike general anesthesia, local anesthesia only numbs the area to be treated. The patient therefore remains conscious throughout the procedure. Two types of anesthesia are commonly used: topical anesthesia and injection. |

It is advisable to eat lightly before an operation requiring local anaesthesia. |
Generally speaking, the procedure is carried out in two stages:

Some side effects – most of them temporary – may occur following local anaesthesia. However, these are quite rare.
|
The anesthetic effect may last for a long time; you may still feel numb a few hours after the procedure. This numbness may affect your speech and chewing. Be patient: all your sensations will gradually return throughout the day. |
