Based on the hygienist’s preliminary report, X-rays and the examination of your mouth, the dentist will be able to give you a current picture of your dental health. To examine your teeth and mouth tissues, the dentist will use simple instruments:

  • Water/air gun: Even when clean and smooth, your teeth can be difficult to observe, as they quickly become coated with saliva. By drying them out, their color and brightness can reveal a little more to your dentist. What’s more, an air jet on your gums can reveal their resistance and degree of attachment around your teeth. Gingival pockets can also be observed, if present.
  • Explorer and mirror: In addition to allowing you to see the inaccessible surfaces of your teeth, the mirror serves as an instrument for clearing the patient’s cheeks or lips. The explorer is a fine hook used, among other things, to determine the porosity of teeth. Incipient decay is characterized by porous enamel. The dentist can thus assess this porosity thanks to the explorer’s grip.
  • X-rays: X-rays enable the dentist to detect cavities invisible to the eye (between the teeth or under the gums), as well as the presence of cysts and tumors. These radiographs (film or digital) will be recorded in your dental record and used as a reference or to support predeterminations and/or claims to your insurer, if applicable.

In addition to your teeth, your new dentist will examine your entire mouth. Your dentist will examine the tissues of your cheeks, your gums, your tongue and your jaw joints, known as TMJ (temporomandibular joints). Depending on the tools available (X-rays, CT scans), he may assess the condition of your jawbone, since we all experience a certain amount of bone loss with age. He may also observe the presence of cysts and tumours. Sometimes, your dentist will be able to identify the causes of certain tooth pains that originate outside the mouth: for example, sinusitis visible on an X-ray may explain pain in the canines despite the absence of cavities or other direct pathology. Finally, since your dentist can detect oral cancers, he or she will be able to refer you to a dentist specializing in oral pathology for sampling.
