A dental fistula is a channel that is gradually created to remove a purulent substance produced by an untreated infection. When a periapical or periodontal abscess is not rapidly managed, or if it becomes chronic, the pus accumulated inside it seeks to clear a passage to drain naturally. Fistula is called “external” when it makes its way to the skin (causing a visible lesion on the chin or cheek).
