The fight against germsGerms are everywhere. Some are beneficial to humans and others are pathogenic, causing disease or infection. In dentistry, rigorous aseptic procedures are used to prevent contamination of patients and staff with pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites). |

What is asepsis?Asepsis is described as the absence of microorganisms that can cause infections. In the dental environment, asepsis depends on a whole chain of actions that must be undertaken by dental personnel and each step must take place without introducing microorganisms. Maintaining an aseptic environment involves the use of techniques such as handwashing, wearing protective gloves, masks and glasses, cleaning and disinfecting work areas and cleaning and sterilizing instruments that come into contact with the patient’s mouth. |

An obligation for the dentistAccording to the Code of Ethics of Dentists, compliance with hygiene and asepsis is a legal obligation for the dentist and his team. At any time, the Ordre des dentistes du Québec may make an unannounced visit to a dental clinic to verify that the infection control protocol is being properly applied. Failure to comply with the protocol may result in the closure of the clinic. The main recommendations for asepsis can be found in the Infection Control Information Document published jointly by the Ordre des dentistes du Québec and the Ordre des hygiénistes dentaires du Québec. |
